The Web 3.0 Conference, hosted by Mediabistro, kicks off January 26-27, causing keyboard jockeys across the length and breadth of my desk to scream: Dear Academics, please stop declaring new eras of technological advancement every time you've talked the current era to death.

| Linux-based mobile phone launches at CES 2010 |

Yesterday, Unwired View (and the rest of the gabbling, CES 2010 attendant world) tossed out some notes on Emblaze mobile's shiny new contender for the global not-an-iPhone smartphone title belt. And the nifty part? The Else Emblaze (also being schizophrenically marketed as the Else Intuition... wait, maybe that's "First Else") features an Access Linux-based OS and a lovely touchscreen GUI that looks - dare we say it - mildly cyberpunk. Do want.

| Inside Interop New York: The Keynote |
|
Blog
|
|
Curt Franklin, online community organizer for Interop events, posts updates from Interop New York, going on now. "It’s my first day here at Interop New York, and I’m starting with
the keynote address. This year, it’s a triple-header, with Mark
Templeton (President and CEO of Citrix), Marie Hattar (VP of networking
and security at Cisco), and David Pogue (who’s, well, David Pogue of
the New York Times). I’ll be live-blogging the keynotes and tweeting in
my account (kg4gwa) on Twitter.
"The room’s already at least 2/3 full — not bad for an early morning
session that will go for two hours. The music is mellow (rather than
the dance-floor techno-rock that seems mandatory for most speeches
these days) and my coffee is starting to kick in. Should be a good
morning…" Read the rest here

| She's Geeky Unplugged: Day 2 |

This morning I walked into the NCLR meeting facility to the announcement that the building had no power. There was talk of canceling the conference, but everyone who showed up wanted to go ahead. We pulled out two large construction type flashlights to give us a “camp fire” and we had a small gas burner to heat up water for coffee and tea. Everyone pulled together to make the necessary adjustments to the room and bring the session indicators into the lobby which has a glass front. Thus was born a technical conference without technology. It was wonderful! Our own She’s Geeky camping trip.
